Merit Selection Process

Georges River Council is an equal employment opportunity employer. Appointment to a vacant position is based solely on merit. Merit is determined according to the nature of the duties to be performed, the abilities, qualifications, experience and potential against the essential and desirable selection criteria as outlined in the Position Description for the position. The determination of merit will be based on your written application, face to face interview and the information obtained through our reference checking and other pre-employment checks such as a medical examination and Criminal Record Check.

Information Declaration

You must provide complete, honest and accurate information on your application for employment form and all supporting documents. Any Statement or omission in your application found to be deliberately false or misleading will render your application void. If appointed, your failure to provide complete, honest and accurate information may lead to subsequent dismissal.


1.   Covering Letter

A brief introductory letter outlining your intention to apply for the vacant position and documenting contents of the rest of your application.

2.   Resume

Your resume should outline your education/training, qualifications, work history, personal information and referees. You may also like to include information on additional skills, qualifications or personal interests that may strengthen your application.

3.   A completed online application

You must complete in full all requested information on the online application. This is an important part of your application and must be completed even if it means duplicating information from other documents you may attach.

Part of the online application requires you to nominate two referees. One of these must be your current or most recent employer. If your referees are contacted, they will be asked to provide information on your past employment and performance and to verify or comment on claims made by you in your application and interview.

Council will not contact your referees prior to interviews or without your prior consent.


Requirements to meet essential criteria

During the online application process you will be asked a series of questions. These questions are based on each essential and desirable selection criteria outlined in the Position Description. You should write at least one to two paragraphs for each, explaining how you have demonstrated the particular skill or quality by providing evidence and specific details.

Each criteria should be addressed in enough detail to enable us to consider your application. It is the perfect chance for you to sell yourself and give an explanation of how your relevant qualifications, skills and experience satisfy the selection criteria.

If a particular criteria is listed as 'desirable' and you do not possess the skills or experience to satisfy it, give an example of how you would be willing and able to acquire new skills.

Please note that if your application does not contain the above components it is unlikely that you will advance to the interview stage.

Acknowledgement of your application

All applications will be acknowledged by email. Please make sure an email address is provided before submitting your online application.

4. Short listing

The selection committee will consist of a panel of at least three (3) people who will assess your application against the essential and desirable criteria for the position. The most suitable applicants will be contacted to attend an interview where a more detailed assessment is made.

If you are successful in gaining an interview you will be notified at least 2 working days prior. When you are contacted for an interview you will be advised of any supporting documents or examples of work you may be required to bring along. 

5. Interviews

It is in your own interest to prepare for your interview by reading through all the information provided to you, within the position description.

6. Following the interview

Once the interviews are complete the referee checks will be completed. The preferred applicant will then be formally recommended and an offer of employment will be made. Please note that further checks for example a medical examination may be necessary for some positions before employment can be finalised.

If a position is advertised as being 'child related', you will be required to present a current working with children check for verification by Georges River Council.
